September is Suicide Prevention Month

How We Can Save Lives Through Awareness and Art?

Each September, communities across the nation come together to recognize Suicide Prevention & Awareness Month. This is more than a month on the calendar it’s a life-saving reminder that every voice matters, every life matters, and hope is always possible.

At Art Not Drugs, we believe that creative expression is a powerful tool in preventing suicide among at-risk youth. For many, art becomes more than colors on a canvas it becomes a voice when words feel too heavy to speak.

Why Suicide Awareness Matters

  • Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among young people ages 10–24.

  • Every year, thousands of families are impacted by a tragedy that is often preventable.

  • Stigma, silence, and lack of resources prevent many from seeking help.

But here’s the truth: suicide is preventable. With open conversations, community support, and safe spaces for expression, we can change the story.

🎨 How Art Heals Minds

At AND, we use art, mentorship, and trauma-informed programs to give youth an outlet for their emotions. Why? Because:

  • Art reduces stress and anxiety by providing a healthy release.

  • Creative expression builds resilience, helping young people process pain.

  • Community art projects remind youth they are not alone — they are part of something bigger.

We’ve seen firsthand how a paintbrush, a sketchbook, or a mural project can transform despair into hope.

🤝 What You Can Do This Month

  • Start the conversation: Ask someone how they’re doing — and really listen.

  • Share resources: Remind others that help is available 24/7.

  • Support organizations: Get involved with groups like AND that give young people tools for healing.

  • Take care of yourself: Your mental health matters too.

📞 If You or Someone You Know Needs Help

You are not alone. If you or someone you know is in crisis, please call or text 988 to connect with the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Support is free, confidential, and available 24/7.

💛 Our Promise

This September, and every day, Art Not Drugs stands with those struggling in silence. We believe in hope. We believe in healing. And we believe that every mind deserves a canvas, not chains.

Together, we can create a world where no one feels their only option is silence.
